Fuzzy Bandits
The Wild RobotThe Fuzzy Bandits are three large raccoons named Bumpkin, Lumpkin, and Rumpkin, introduced into the story by Mr. Beaver as his friends. They are first mentioned when Mr. Beaver, having finished carving a wooden foot for the injured robot Roz, announces that his friends should be arriving with the next things needed for the project. True to his word, the three raccoons enter Roz's garden dragging behind them an enmeshed tangle of vines, and Bumpkin greets the company with a simple "Good day." Their arrival marks the beginning of their involvement in the island community's efforts to restore Roz to full function.
Role in Crafting Roz's New Foot
The Fuzzy Bandits' first significant contribution comes during the construction of Roz's replacement foot. After Mr. Beaver carves a boot-shaped wooden foot and fits it to Roz's stump, the raccoons supply the vines that will bind the new appendage together. Trunktap, a woodpecker, drills deep holes into an old pine tree, causing a thick, syrupy resin to flow from the trunk. Mr. Beaver then spreads handfuls of this resin over the wooden foot and the vines until everything is shiny and sticky. When the resin dries, Roz's foot is complete, and she walks through her garden declaring herself "like new." However, this first attempt proves imperfect: within a week, the vines come undone and the foot slips. The group returns, determined to do the job properly. They find harder wood and stronger vines, and they experiment with the resin, heating it near a fire, letting it boil and thicken until it becomes an indestructible glue. They continue tinkering with their design until Roz finally has a wooden foot she can rely on. Mr. Beaver celebrates their success with a triumphant "Huzzah!" and taps his fingers on the new and improved creation, declaring that he knew they would succeed. Though Roz moves more slowly than before and walks with a slight limp, she is herself again, a relief to everyone, especially Brightbill.
Learning Fire and Joining the Community
The Fuzzy Bandits' role expands beyond craftsmanship when Roz opens her home to a community of animals seeking shelter. Many of these lodgers have never seen fire before, and they regard it with a mixture of fear and hope, feeling both its destructive power and its healing warmth as it warms their bones. Understanding that it is important for the lodgers to comprehend fire, Roz teaches them how to build one, showing the small animals how to arrange kindling and the larger animals how to arrange logs. In this lesson, Bumpkin, Lumpkin, and Rumpkin strike the fire stones together, and everyone applauds when they finally manage to produce a spark. This moment cements their place within the community as active participants in its shared life, contributing to the collective learning that Roz fosters.
The Battle Against the RECO Robots
The Fuzzy Bandits' most consequential action comes during the confrontation with the RECO robots. As a swarm of birds descends from the treetops and bombards RECO 3 with droppings, blinding its eyes with filth, the raccoons wait for their moment. When RECO 3 drops its weapon and wipes its dirty face with both hands, the Fuzzy Bandits emerge from the tall grass, seize the rifle with their agile hands, and carry it away. Tawny and Crownpoint watch from the underbrush, and the deer lowers its head so the raccoons can carefully place the rifle on its antlers. Then the deer and the raccoons slip into the shadows. By the time RECO 3 realizes its weapon is gone, it is too late; it lets out a sad electronic tone and, as the birds continue their bombardment, turns and stumbles blindly backward into the mud. This theft sets the stage for the final phase of the plan, in which Broadfoot the moose emerges from the trees and kicks the blinded robot's head from its body, ending its threat permanently. The Fuzzy Bandits' quick thinking and nimble hands thus prove essential to the community's defense, transforming them from simple helpers into decisive actors in the island's struggle for survival.
